To me Snowboarding is about searching for the ultimate ride, the ultimate moment, the ‘perfect descent’.
This is the goal, to ride in perfect harmony with the mountains greatest terrain, the sky is blue, the high peaks fill the skyline and the deep untracked snow sparkles in anticipation. Your riding flows, you feel weightless, active and powerful. You feel every crystal passing under foot and you carve deep, slash, cut and power your way gracefully down the mountain. You move perfectly over your feet, your technique matches perfectly your desire as you create your line, your art on the mountains untracked canvas.
The Perfect descent is an enigma, in fact, it doesn’t really exist! When ever you get close, the goal posts simply advance towards the next horizon and you are always chasing that even greater feeling and that even greater descent but the idea, the philosophy of striving for perfection in your performance, whatever the level of the task is for me the reason why I do the things that I do.
Perfection in snowsports performance is only found when everything comes together in the right place at the right time. It is a combination of technical efficiency, creative ability and good timing the blending together of the creative and technical or what I call the ‘Art and the Science’.
The first steps in your search for the ultimate ride are in developing your understanding of the ‘Science’ behind your actions.
In order to search for perfection in your performance you must first understand the functions, actions and reactions of your movements and discover the perfect technique to suit every task.
As your technique develops and your understanding grows you will begin to demand more from your performance increasing the difficulty of the task and you will begin to look to your ‘Artistic’ side for guidance exploring different lines, different speeds, different aspects, gradients and terrain shapes.
Slowly you will begin to challenge your self amidst the untamed natural terrain of the mountain. Day by day your idea of what is possible will change as you look to create new feelings, greater challenges and more powerful lines.
You are now starting to blend the ‘Art and the Science’, your creative vision with the most efficient actions to suit the task, matching your movements, your line and your flow to the constantly changing contours and challenges of each new descent.
Slowly your ‘Artistic’ performance takes priority. It is no longer the technical challenge that draws you on but the feeling of flowing with the mounatin and the desire to create stronger and more powerful lines in more and more interesting terrain.
This is the philosophy behind the design and content of our Ski and Snowboard course program.
Our courses are designed to help you develop your understanding of firstly the ‘Science’ behind your performance with our ‘Technical performance clinics’.
Next we lead you onwards to explore the challenges posed by blending the ‘Art and the Science’, exploring both technique and its application to the terrain, freeriding on one of our ‘Off-piste clinics’ and then finally we have our ‘Backcountry program’ where we work beyond technique with those that are exploring the ‘Artistic’ side of things beginning their search for the ultimate ride.
This is the philosophy with which I have developed my personal Snowboarding performance. Trying to find the perfect blend of the “art and the Science’, both working in harmony, perfect movements with the perfect line whilst searching for the perfect conditions. The ultimate descent still remains a lifetime away but every day I try to get a little bit closer.
